Inspiring the Next Generation: SIMIAN’s Commitment to Encouraging Careers in Construction
14th October 2024
At SIMIAN, we believe in shaping the future of the construction industry by engaging with the local community and introducing young people to the many rewarding careers the industry offers. Through initiatives like our Construction JOBSFESTS in partnership with the London Borough of Waltham Forest council and school outreach programs, we aim to ignite interest in construction and scaffolding among local students, offering them guidance, inspiration, and hands-on experience.
Our Construction JOBSFESTS are one of the key ways we connect with young people in the local community. These events offer students the chance to explore the wide variety of careers available within construction. These events aren’t just about talking to students; they are about showing them firsthand what a career in construction could look like.
Students have the opportunity to meet with professionals, ask questions, and most importantly, get hands-on experience that brings construction to life. It’s this combination of practical learning and professional guidance that sets our JOBSFESTS apart.
Real-Life Inspiration: TCES East London School, Morgan’s Journey
One of our recent success stories is Morgan, a Year 10 student from TCES, who attended our Construction JOBSFEST in September. Morgan’s story is a fantastic example of how our events can spark interest and open doors for students. Here’s Morgan’s account of his experience:
“Miss Clara asked me if I would like to come to SIMIAN Construction JOBSFEST. I remember attending it last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. When we got there, I noticed a man I remember from last year and said to Miss Clara, ‘his name is Kevin.’ Kevin recognised me too!
I remembered exactly what to do when erecting the scaffolding from last year, and Kevin was very impressed that I remembered, especially when he saw me supporting my team while erecting the scaffolding. Kevin then asked if I would like to be his assistant Foreman for the next few training sessions.
I felt so delighted that Kevin had such faith in me. I helped Kevin train other students and was in the finishing pictures with them. They were also very grateful for my support, and it made me feel mature and responsible. Maybe this is a great opportunity for my future career.”
Morgan’s story is a testament to the impact that a positive experience with the construction industry can have on a young person’s aspirations. Not only did Morgan demonstrate initiative and teamwork, but he also showed the confidence and potential that we hope to foster in all students who attend our events.
At SIMIAN, we understand that the construction industry is evolving, and with that evolution comes a need for fresh, skilled talent. By engaging with local schools, we aim to make construction accessible and appealing to the younger generation.
