How Arc Group is Building a Skilled Roofing Workforce with SIMIAN

10th June 2025

At Arc Group London, investing in apprenticeships isn’t just about meeting immediate workforce needs, it’s about laying the foundations for a stronger, more skilled construction industry for years to come. With a growing team of 22 apprentices, including seven specialising in waterproof membrane installation, Arc is making big strides in addressing the roofing sector’s critical skills shortage.

When Arc Group began looking for a training provider for their waterproof membrane apprentices, SIMIAN stood out. As one of the only providers offering this specialist training in London at the time, SIMIAN was the clear choice.

But it wasn’t just about location it was about results. “We’ve always had positive experiences with the knowledge our apprentices bring back from their training,” explains Amy Packer, Social Value Manager at Arc. “The learning is genuinely being applied, and that makes a real difference on-site.”

Arc ensures every apprentice is partnered with a fully qualified waterproofer, giving them daily opportunities to practise new skills, build confidence, and work effectively within a team. The company works closely with SIMIAN to stay informed about what apprentices are learning each term, helping them align college learning with the right on-site projects.

This thoughtful, proactive approach is already delivering visible results. “We’ve definitely seen a boost in confidence and teamwork among our apprentices, and that translates directly to their performance on-site,” says Amy.

Tackling Challenges Together

Of course, no apprenticeship journey is without its challenges. One apprentice living in Cambridge faced the daunting task of a 100-mile commute to attend college. With support from SIMIAN and guidance on applying for the CITB’s Travel to Train incentives, Arc was able to ensure that this apprentice could stay closer to training, gaining both independence and practical experience.

Another apprentice faced serious attendance issues tied to safeguarding concerns. Thanks to SIMIAN’s responsive and collaborative support, Arc was able to navigate the situation with care and prevent the apprentice from dropping out entirely.

Long-Term Planning, Real Opportunities

Arc doesn’t just invest in apprentices for the short term. The company has a robust five-year training plan in place for each individual. The goal is to help them continue developing their waterproofing expertise, complete CPD with various roofing suppliers, and, if they choose, progress to NVQ Level 3 in supervision. From there, the path to site management and further career development is wide open.

“Our 100% apprentice retention rate is something we’re incredibly proud of,” says Amy. “Even one who moved to Australia is still in the trade. That says a lot.”

Partnership That Works

The collaboration between Arc Group and SIMIAN’s London Academy of Sustainable Construction (LASC) has been a key part of this success. “The whole process has been great,” Amy notes. “Luke and the team at SIMIAN LASC are brilliant, they are hands-on and clear with their communication. It feels like a real partnership.”

A Strategic Investment in the Industry

With a well documented skills shortage across construction, Arc recognises the urgent need to develop the next generation of skilled workers. “If we don’t invest in apprentices, we’ll never be able to meet the demand for trained professionals in the future,” says Amy.

Her advice to others considering apprenticeship programmes? “Make sure your apprentices have a dedicated mentor, not just a line manager. And build a good relationship with your training provider before you start, it makes a big difference.”

Beyond its own workforce, Arc is committed to inspiring future talent. As the Enterprise Advisor for Leytonstone School, Amy is helping students at risk of becoming NEETs (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) explore careers in construction.

Through a series of four workshops, including a visit to SIMIAN LASC to see the waterproof membrane apprenticeship in action, students get hands-on experience and the chance to meet real professionals. The final session brings in parents and careers advisers to ensure everyone understands the opportunity and commitment involved in pursuing an apprenticeship.

Arc Group’s commitment to structured training, long-term career development, and genuine partnership with SIMIAN is shaping the future of the roofing sector, one apprentice at a time. With passion, professionalism, and a forward-thinking approach, they’re not only filling today’s roles but also creating tomorrow’s industry leaders.
