An Introduction to Construction: Students Experience Hands-On Learning at SIMIAN LASC

21st January 2025

On a recent visit to SIMIAN LASC, a group of students got the chance to dive into the dynamic world of construction through a comprehensive overview and hands-on workshop. The day was designed to give them a taste of what it’s like to work in this thriving industry, with a special focus on the essential trades of scaffolding and roofing. With the guidance of experienced instructors and a focus on practical skills, the students were able to observe and participate in key tasks, learning not only technical skills but also important values such as teamwork, communication, and health & safety practices.

The day kicked off with a roofing overview, where students got the chance to fix some tiles and experience the precision required to maintain safe, reliable roofs. As part of the activity, they learned the importance of keeping the work environment clean and organised. Clearing up any mess after the job is done is crucial, both for safety reasons and to maintain efficiency on the site. The hands-on task was not only about technical skills but also about learning the discipline needed for such work.

Next, the students turned their attention to scaffolding, an essential aspect of many construction projects. They observed how to safely erect and dismantle a system scaffolding, understanding the importance of stability, structure, and safety in these tasks. It was a real eye-opener for the students, who saw firsthand how scaffolding is used to provide safe access to elevated work areas on construction sites.

The visit was packed with learning opportunities, and the students quickly realised that working in construction requires much more than just physical skills. Some of the key takeaways from the workshop included:

  • Teamwork: Many of the tasks, whether it was assembling scaffolding or repairing roofs, required students to work together. In construction, collaboration is essential, and the students saw how important it is to coordinate efforts with others to achieve a common goal.
  • Communication Skills: Whether it’s talking through a problem on the site or ensuring everyone is aware of safety measures, clear communication is key in construction. The students practiced these skills throughout the day, learning how important it is to communicate effectively and efficiently on the job.
  • Hands-On Working: Students were able to get their hands dirty and directly engage with the materials, which gave them a true sense of what construction work is all about. From fixing tiles to managing scaffolding systems, the practical experience made the learning process more tangible and valuable.
  • Manual Calculations: The students also learned about the importance of calculations in construction. Whether calculating the load-bearing capacity of scaffolding or measuring the angles for roof tiles, manual calculations are a critical skill in this field.
  • Health & Safety Practices: Throughout the workshop, the students were reminded of the importance of adhering to strict health and safety standards. Wearing full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) was mandatory, giving them a real-world understanding of the safety protocols that must be followed in construction to prevent accidents and injuries.

The main goal of the visit was to give the students a full overview of what LASC (London Academy of Sustainable Construction) offers in terms of training and courses. By observing scaffolding and roofing courses in action, they were able to get a sense of the comprehensive training that LASC provides. The students saw what they could expect if they joined these courses, from hands-on practical training to gaining important certifications that would help them succeed in the construction industry.

The visit also gave the students an insight into the career opportunities available to them in the construction sector. Whether they choose to specialise in scaffolding, roofing, or another aspect of construction, the skills they develop can set them on a path to a rewarding and secure career.
