Anthony, a long-time Waltham Forest resident and licensed London taxi driver, has always enjoyed his career on the road, but wanted to boost his income and explore a new industry. When he discovered that the Construction Operative Training Scheme (COTS) course at SIMIAN LASC was being funded by the London Borough of Waltham Forest for residents of Waltham Forest, it was the perfect opportunity to kickstart a venture in the scaffolding industry.
Anthony, like many Londoners, was looking for a flexible, reliable way to supplement his income. After considering his options, the construction sector caught his eye—specifically scaffolding, due to its strong demand for skilled workers. When he found out that Waltham Forest Council was funding places on the COTS course for local residents, Anthony knew this was a great opportunity.
“I’ve always been interested in construction,” Anthony said. “But like many people, I wasn’t sure where to start. When I found out about the COTS course at SIMIAN LASC, and that it was funded by the council, I knew it was something I couldn’t pass up.”
The COTS course at SIMIAN provides a thorough introduction to scaffolding for those new to the industry. Over the course of the training, delegates develop an understanding of the key health and safety principles required to work on construction sites, while learning essential scaffolding skills.
On completion of the COTS Course, Anthony said:
“I would recommend the health and safety course and COTS course to any local resident thinking of a career in the construction or scaffolding industry. The course is delivered expertly, with excellent content from both a theoretical and application point of view. The main takeaway for me was the emphasis on health and safety in the construction industry.”
Now that Anthony has completed his COTS training, he’s well-equipped to take on labouring roles within the construction industry, especially in scaffolding.
The funding for Anthony’s COTS course was provided by the London Borough of Waltham Forest as part of their commitment to supporting local residents in developing new skills and enhancing job opportunities. If you are a local resident of Waltham Forest Borough, then call the LASC centre on 0345 6022 418 to find out more about this funding.
