At 33 years old, Toneyann is an example of resilience and determination in an industry where women are often underrepresented. As she embarks on the Part 2B aspect of her apprenticeship at SIMIAN LASC with JRL, she’s not just learning the ropes—she’s proving that gender is no barrier to success in scaffolding.
Toneyann’s journey into scaffolding began with a referral from a friend who was doing health and safety ay JRL and invited her in to do some labouring. With a skilled labouring card in hand, she quickly made an impression, saying “The managers wanted to keep me, and I wanted to progress. And of course, it’s more money.”
Advice for Women Entering the Industry
For women considering a career in scaffolding, Toneyann stated, “If you’ve just started, I would highly recommend it. But for females on site, you need to be thick-skinned and ready for a very physical journey. Just get stuck in like everyone else.” Her words are from experience, offering a look at what it takes to succeed in this demanding field.
Toneyann is also passionate about encouraging more women to enter the industry. “I would love to be a part of inspiring other women. I feel girls want to get into it but maybe are scared, and I want to encourage them.” Her message is clear: don’t let fear hold you back. The rewards, both personally and professionally, are worth it.
Why SIMIAN LASC?
Reflecting on her experience with SIMIAN, Toneyann stated. “The way SIMIAN organises and plan it makes it a very good apprenticeship programme. I have nothing but good things to say—I am very happy with the course and SIMIAN.” She highlights the diverse teaching methods as a key strength, noting that “every tutor has their own different ways of teaching, and you get to experience that.”
When talking about Scaffolding as a career, Toneyann said:
“I love scaffolding because it’s tangible. You get a sense of achievement when you erect a large scaffolding—yes, man, I have done that!”. “As a woman, I do feel like sometimes I need to do a little bit more because I’m not as strong as the men on site. I physically don’t have the strength, so I do need to work extra hard.”
In an industry where women are still a minority, her journey is a powerful reminder that with the right mindset and support, anything is possible. For more information about SIMIAN Apprenticeship programmes, click here.
