16th January 2024

In a bid to inspire and guide the next generation towards a rewarding career in construction, SIMIAN at LASC, in collaboration with Taylor Wimpey, recently conducted an engaging Introduction to Construction Workshop at Buxton School in Leytonstone in December 2023. The workshop targeted 150 enthusiastic Year 9 students, aiming to broaden their understanding of the construction industry and its diverse opportunities.

The workshop covered a spectrum of topics designed to provide students with a comprehensive overview of the construction sector. The key areas explored included:

  • Understanding Construction: Defining the fundamental concepts of construction.
  • Types of Construction: Exploring the various branches and specialisations within the construction industry.
  • Sustainability: Emphasising the importance of sustainable practices in construction.
  • Modern Methods of Construction: Introducing innovative techniques shaping the future of the industry.
  • Construction Site Dynamics: Offering insights into the workings and components of a construction site.
  • Roles in Construction: Highlighting the diverse job opportunities available within the sector.
  • Wages of Different Trades: Providing a realistic understanding of the earning potential in various construction roles.

The workshop concluded with an interactive quiz, reinforcing the knowledge gained, and prizes were awarded to the winners, adding an element of excitement. Looking ahead, the next session will focus on the practical application of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in different job roles within the construction field.

Speaking of the workshop delivered, Ann-Marie, Buxton School’s Careers Lead/Deputy Head said:

“Sara and Lisa planned and delivered an informative and engaging assembly to our year 9 cohort on different careers within the construction industry. The assembly touched on topics such as stereotypes, pay, different roles as well as the future of the industry. Students were actively engaged; listening and asking questions.”

Furthermore, SIMIAN at LASC, represented by Sara Calvo, and Taylor Wimpey’s Lisa Beresford, are committed to fostering a lasting impact on students’ career choices. They are working closely with Buxton School’s Careers Lead/Deputy Head to enhance career engagement opportunities, aligning with the Gatsby Benchmarks for good careers guidance.

The upcoming initiatives include tours of Coronation Square in Leyton, hands-on workshops at LASC, and employability workshops tailored for Year 10 and 11 students. The goal is to encourage and support the Year 9 cohort in considering a rewarding career path in construction.

Rosie Hart, The East London Careers Hub in association with Local London, said the following when asked about the work of Sara and Lisa:

“Local London Careers Hub East would like to thank our volunteer Enterprise Advisers, Sara and Lisa, for delivering an insightful session about the varied roles in Construction to students at Buxton School.
