SIMIAN at LASC and Taylor Wimpey opening doors to a world of possibilities within the construction industry.

30th January 2024

Continuing their quest to inspire and guide the next generation towards fulfilling careers in construction, Sara Calvo from SIMIAN at LASC and Lisa Beresford from Taylor Wimpey, recently visited Limes Academy to deliver an interactive Introduction to Construction Workshop tailored for students with Special Educational Needs (SEN). This unique session took place at Hornbeam School in Walthamstow, focusing on providing engaging activities and expanding opportunities for students in Year 9 and beyond.

The workshop aimed to create an inclusive and enriching experience for 150 enthusiastic SEN students, introducing them to the world of construction through a series of specially designed activities. The curriculum covered various aspects of the construction industry, emphasizing the following key areas:

  • Foundations of Construction: Clarifying fundamental concepts and principles in construction.
  • Diverse Career Opportunities: Exploring a wide range of job roles within the construction sector.
  • Sustainable Practices: Highlighting the importance of environmentally friendly approaches in construction.
  • Innovative Techniques: Introducing modern methods shaping the future of the industry.
  • Insights into Construction Sites: Providing a closer look at the dynamics and components of construction sites.
  • Realistic Earning Potentials: Offering insights into the wages of different trades within the field.

The workshop concluded with an entertaining and interactive quiz, reinforcing the knowledge gained during the session. Prizes were awarded to winners, adding an element of excitement and encouragement for the students. Looking ahead, the next session is planned to focus on the practical application of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in various job roles within the construction field.

Sharon Murphy, Limes Academy’s SEN Teacher/Post 14 Careers and Qualifications Lead, expressed her thanks on the workshop

“Many thanks to Sara and Lisa for delivering three amazing employability sessions for our learners last week. The interactive sessions, with group activities and quizzes engaged all our learners and staff. The use of sounds and visuals is really important for our learners, especially those with more complex needs. It was a great introduction into the world of construction and we are looking forward to the next session on PPE!”

Building on their commitment to making a lasting impact on students’ career choices, Sara Calvo and Lisa Beresford from SIMIAN at LASC and Taylor Wimpey are collaborating closely with Limes Academy. Their aim is to enhance career engagement opportunities for students with SEN, aligning with the Gatsby Benchmarks for good careers guidance.

Smita Solanki, Enterprise Co-ordinator, Local London Careers Hub East commented:

“A big thank you to Sara and Lisa, our Enterprise Advisors from SIMIAN and Taylor Wimpey for delivering our Construction Day workshops at Lime Academy Hornbeam.  The students gained an introduction to the industry and the range of careers roles available in this field.  During the session, students participated in group work, demonstrating teamwork, listening and communication skills.  A very insightful day for all. Without the support of our employers, we would not be able to run sessions like this in school.  Thank you and we look forward to the next one.”

Sara Calvo and Lisa Beresford, in their roles as Enterprise Advisors with Local London Careers Hub East, are dedicated to delivering valuable insights and opportunities to young minds, fostering a passion for construction, and opening doors to a world of possibilities.
